Hi everyone! After a bit of ‘um’ing and ‘ah’ing, I’ve decided that I am going to take my NEWTs this August. I originally thought about delaying this until September as I wanted to be able to mood read but I have some plans up my sleeve for September so I thought there was no time like the present to get my NEWTs done.
I absolutely loved doing the OWLS readathon which I did in July. I managed to surpass my target of 5 books and read 6 that were for the readathon which I’m pleased with as I now have more options for the NEWTs.
The NEWTs readathon is being hosted once again by the wonderful Booktuber Book Roast, I still can’t believe how incredible these readathons are – so much thoguht has gone into them and it’s great to see so many people taking part too. The idea of the NEWTs is to take those subjects we passed at OWL level up a notch and move onto our NEWTs. If you completed the OWLs, you are only able to do NEWTs in the subejcts you passed. This time there are layers to each subject with Acceptable, Exceeds Expectations and Outstanding. You have to start on the prompt for A and then move up to E and O once you have completed the first prompts. I love this extra layer as it adds more of a challenge. You can find out more of the details by watching this video which also includes a link to the prompts for all available subjects – it’s never too late to join!
I have 6 subjects to choose from but I definitely don’t plan on reading 18 books for this readathon! I’ll leave my goals list at the bottom of this TBR.
- Acceptable: Read a book with a colour in the title: Wild Blue Wonder by Carlie Sorosiak
- Exceeds Expectations: Read a book with a male lead: Run, Riot by Nikesh Shukla
- Outstanding: Read a book with 350+ pages: Friendship Fails of Emma Nash by Chloe Seager
- Acceptable: Read a last book in a series: War Storm by Victoria Aveyard
- Exceeds Expectations: Read a foiled book: Seed by Lisa Heathfield
- Outstanding: Read a book with ‘dark’ in the title or series name: Tarnished City by Vic James
- Acceptable: Read a book with magic in it: Gilded Cage by Vic James
- Exceeds Expectations: Read a book with a charming cover: Tangleweed and Brine by Deirdre Sullivan
- Outstanding: Read a book you think will leave a mark: Tender by Eve Ainsworth
- Acceptable: Read a book with grey on the cover: The Astonishing Colour of After by Emily X. R. Pan
- Exceeds Expectations: Read a new to me author: Bookshop Girl by Chloe Coles
- Outstanding: Read a book set in a kingdom/with royals: Queens of Fennbirn by Kendare Blake
I also passed OWLs in Divination and Care of Magical Creatures but I don’t plan to complete these at NEWT level. I have, however, thought of some book ideas if I do happen to end up doing them fully or partially. The four subjects above will be my priority though…
Care of Magical Creatures:
- Acceptable: Animal on the cover: Bright Ruin by Vic James
- Exceeds Expectations: Under 160 pages: Nick & Charlie by Alice Oseman
- Oustanding: A book with dragons: The Last Namsara by Kristen Ciccarelli
Divination
- Acceptable: Set in the future: Scythe by Neal Shusterman
- Exceeds Expectations: Under 200 pages: Unboxed by Non Pratt
- Oustanding: A book with/about mythology: Beyond the Odyssey by Maz Evans
So there we have the full TBR! I am under no illusion that I will read all of these so I’ve set out some goals below that I would like to achieve for this readathon. Hopefully I can do all of this but if I don’t, it really won’t be the end of the world as long as I enjoy what I read. (A good time to point out that all books are subject to change…)
- Potions: Outstanding (3 books)
- Defence Against the Dark Arts: Exceeds Expectations (2 books)
- Charms: Outstanding (3 books)
- Transfiguration: Outstanding (3 books)
To achieve this I’ll need to read 11 books which seems manageable. I’ve also included a good mix of backlist, new releases and arcs/Netgalley books. Wish me luck!

Good luck with your TBR! You have some difficult reads on here, I was a mess when I read Seed.

I adored Seed, Beyond the Odyssey and Unboxed when I read them, and have the Friendship Fails of Emma Nash, Bookshop Girl and the Astonishing Colour of After on my TBR. I’m looking forward to getting to them all 😊

I am excited for me to read all the Vic James too. I’m going to try and make it so I can read all three in one go 🙂

Best of luck with your NEWTs! I’m taking part too but I think I’ve been much too ambitious with my TBR, and I’ve put all the long books first – doh!

I also didn’t think about the length of books and my second book is 672 pages long – think it’s the longest on my TBR though so if I can get through this one I can get through anything! (That’s what I’m telling myself anyway…) Good luck!

Good luck, and great TBR! The only one I’ve read here was The Astonishing Color of After but I loved it so I hope you will, too 🙂

Oh this challenge sounds like so much fun! I love your TBR as well… So do they do this challenge every month? I want to give it a try, but I don’t think I’ll be able to do so this month. Good luck with your N.E.W.T.s!

I think it’s going to be an annual thing. But the OWLs were originally in April and I did them in July so you could definitely do them whenever you fancy! It was a fun way to make a TBR 🙂

This is a wonderful list of books! A lot of these books are on my TBR too and I’m curieus to see what you think of them. Good luck with your N.E.W.T.s!
