Hi everyone! Happy weekend! For some reason I forgot to do this after the second quarter of 2018 but I enjoyed writing my First Quarter Favourites and so today I’m sharing my Third Quarter Favourites with you. This is a chance to have a quick look back over some of my favourite reads from the lats three months and hopefully you’ll find something here to add to your own TBRs.

Out of the last 29 books I’ve read between July and September, I’ve picked 9 of my absolute favourites to share with you. I’d love to hear if you’ve read any of these!

YA Contemporary

I never used to read a ton of YA contemporary but I’m absolutely obsessed now and I’ve read some really excellent books in the past three months. These four books stand out for very different reasons. Theatrical by Maggie Harcourt is like a hug from a best friend. It is full of fun, laughter and the most wonderful behind the scenes theatre setting. Tender by Eve Ainsworth has become a firm favourite of mine. It tells the story of Daisy and Marty, two young carers with very different backgrounds. Ultimately this is a compelling and emotional read about the trials and tribulations they face as young carers but ends in such hope for the both of them. I’ll definitely be reading more of Eve’s books soon. Wild Blue Wonder by Carlie Sorosiak is a gorgeous book in a wonderful camp setting that takes a raw and honest look at grief. I loved the characters and the mystery element kept me glued to the page. Seed by Lisa Heathfield had me absolutely reeling at the end! I was sobbing, I was angry but I was so, so relieved. I wish there was a book two! If you like reading books about cults then I really recommend this one.

YA Mystery/Thriller

Crikey did these books leave me speechless! I still couldn’t really tell you what White Rabbit, Red Wolf by Tom Pollock is about without it sounding much less clever than it is. This book had me hooked right from the beginning. It left my poor little brain feeling a bit battered and bruised after all of the breathtaking twists and turns. Such a compelling and addictive read. Sadie by Courtney Summers has easily become one of my favourite reads of 2018. It tells the story of Sadie who is seeking vengeance for the murder of her little sister. It is told through a series of podcasts and also POVs from Sadie, which certainly helped to up the ante and the suspense. I sobbed at the end of this book. It’s certainly one that will stay with me for a long time.

Middle Grade

I’ve been trying to make a more conscious effort to read more middle grade books this year and whilst the majority of what I read is YA, I’ve definitely found some new MG favourites this quarter. The Storm Keeper’s Island by Catherine Doyle had me completely enchanted from the get go. I could feel how alive the island was from those very first few pages and I could feel its magic creeping into me. This is a true adventure which is steeped in magic and mythology whilst also tackling grief and sadness in a way that is wholly relatable and sensitively done. Tilly & the Bookwanderers (Pages & Co) by Anna James is the book I wish I’d had as a young reader. Even now I adore the idea of falling into the worlds of my favourite books but I can’t imagine how magical this must be to read as a child. I adored Tilly and her grandparents, not to forget Oskar. This book was all the right dosages of magic, fun, sadness and creepiness. I’d love to visit Pages & Co and be a bookwanderer! City of Ghosts by Victoria Schwab was the perfect creepy read for the beginning of autumn. I’ve never been to Edinburgh but plan to soon and so I was fascinated by all the references to famous locations. Cassidy was a really interesting character and I loved the idea of being able to pass back and forth beyond the Veil. I can’t wait for more from this ghostly pair!
