Six for Sunday | Authors Who Surprised Me!

Hi everyone! It’s Sunday and time for a #SixforSunday post! This is a weekly meme hosted by my lovely friend Steph @ A Little But A Lot. Don’t forget to check out her blog for today’s post too!

I’ve taken a little bit of time to think about what this post means because I am in no way surprised by these authors because I expected their books to be bad?! But there are different reasons as to why their books surprised me so I’ll explain in more detail under the covers! (I mean the BOOK covers…)

In Your Light by Annalie Grainger – I didn’t know what to expect when I picked this up. It was recommended to me by Katie Webber and I trust her recs so I imediately bought and read it. Little did I know I was about to find the best surprise EVER: actual Welsh language in a YA book. This also happens to be an excellent book about cults and sisters.

The Call by Peader O Guilin – My booksih friends warned me that this book was dark but it gave me an actual nightmare!

Countless by Karen Gregory – I adore this book with all my heart but I definitely surprised myself with how many tears one person can cry over a book! If you read this (which I suggest you do) then I recommend you have the tissues ready!

The Island at the End of Everything by Kiran Millwood Hargrave – This may be an odd choice because this wasn’t the first of Kiran’s books that I read but there was something about this book that I just really connected with an loved. I was so pleasantly surprised to find out how incredibly gorgeous and lyrical Kiran’s writing truly is.

The Loneliest Girl in the Universe by Lauren James – Before reading this book I wasn’t sure if I was much of a ‘space’ or ‘sci fi’ kinda gal. Having then read the whole of this book in one sitting and in a few short hours, I was very pleased to find out that I definitely am!

Cell 7 by Kerry Drewery – I knew very little about this book before I picked it up but a few of my bookish freinds recommended it to me. Little did I know just how absorbed I was going to become in this series. Kerry has created a very special and chilling dystopian world – chilling because it relates so closely to our own world.

  4. LOVE ‘The Island at the End of Everything’ (and I’m beyond excited for ‘The Way Past Winter’ in October) Not sure about books/authors that surprised me. I’d definitely say the Chaos Walking trilogy from Patrick Ness though.

  5. I enjoyed Countless, but I wasn’t a huge fan of the other 2 I’ve read from this list (though admittedly I thought one was pretty okay, and sctually dislike another!). I want to read In Your Light at some point 😊
