Book Review: Amari and the Night Brothers

I absolutely devoured this 90s based YA gothic horror filled with vampires, New Orleans mythology and mystery! Check out my thoughts below. Thank you to NetGalley, UCLAN publishing and Amy McCaw for my early copy in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Title: Amari and the Night Brothers

Author: B.B. Alston

Genre: Fantasy, Middle Grade

Publisher: Egmont

Pages: 287 pages

My Rating:

Rating: 5 out of 5.

I picked up Amari and the Night Brothers with extremely high expectations after seeing it EVERYWHERE on my social media. I was beginning to feel like the only person not to have read this little gem and boy am I glad I picked it up! A fast paced, magical adventure with the most amazing protagonist and a whole heap of side characters to both love and hate. I could feel myself totally falling in love with this new world as the pages flipped by and before I knew it the first adventure is over!

I love the world that has been created for this series. A seemingly normal world on the outside but little do most people know that their ‘normal’ world is brimming with supernatural beings. Amari finds herself sucked into the world of the Bureau and it’s not long before she is diving head first into new adventures and picking up new skills along the way. I really loved the concept! I want to keep this review spoiler free so I’m reluctant to say much about what happens in the book, but be sure to prepare yourself for twists and turns galore!

Strong characters are so important to me when reading and this book absolutely delivered! I loved Amari as our protagonist. I think young readers in particular will learn a lot from her strength; seeing the background she comes from but that she is still a total badass will really inspire lots of younger readers. That’s not to mention our boy Dylan, his twin Lara or the adorable Elsie. I also adored Magnus and can’t wait to see how his relationship (guardianship?) of Amari will continue in the next book!

Amari and the Night Brothers will ignite your imagination and keep you wanting more! I know for sure that I cannot wait to pick up book 2 as soon as it is out. Adventures with Amari and friends are fun, fast paced and fuel the imagination!!
